4GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
4.1Design
Bricklayers’ hammers shall have a facc on one endof thc head and a cutting edge on the opposite endfor use in setting and cutting (splining; bricks. masonry tile. concrete tile,and concrete blocks and lor chippingmorlar frorn bricks. Prospecting picks shall have a faceon one end of the head and a pick on the oppositeend of the head for use in puiling samples from thcground.
4.1.1The faces of the heads shall be flat.
4.1.2 The faces shall have a chamfer of 45 deg (orequivalcnt radiusy all around the perimeter with thewidih equal to appraximately 0.06 in. (1.5 mm).4.1.3 ihe undcrsidc of the cutting edge or bitof the bricklayers’ harnrner shall have a bevel ofapproximately 30 deg to 45 deg.The two outer conersof the curting cdge shall have a chamfer of approxi-malely 4s deg or equivalent radius.
4.1.4Handlcs shall be of any design,incldingergonomic,that can withstand the tests specified inparas. 4.4.3 and 4.4.4.
4.1.5 The head and handle shall be free of nonfunc-tional sharp edges. points,and surface roughness thatcould inflict personal injury on the user while handingthe bricklayers’hammer or prospecting pick.
4.2 Materials
4.2.1 Heads shall be made from special-quality. hine-grain,hot-rolled,carbon steel bars conforming to thechenical requirements specified in Table 1 and toASTM A 576 or from an equivalent vmaterial such asalloy steel conformning to ASTM A 322 or ASTM A 681.
4.2.2 Hcads shall bc frce of manufacturing andmaterial defects. such as searns. laps. pipcs. and coldshuts thal could jeopardize sound construction. Theyshall conform to requirements for rnechanical propertiesspecified in para. 4.3 and shall wichstand the sinkingtest specified in para.4.4.3.
4.2.3 Handlev shall be madc of any suitable materialthat will wihstand the lest requircmcnts in paras.4.4.3and 4.4.4.
4.3 Mechanical Properties
4.3.1The faces of the hammerheads and pick hcadsshall be hardened and lermpered to a hardness of 15HRC to 60 HRC or equivalent. The steel directlybehind the face shall be a toughened supporting corc.radually decrcasing in hardness.
4.3.2 The blade of the bricklayers” hanmer and thepick end of the prospecting pick shall be hardened toa hardness of 45 HRC to 60 HRC or cquivalen1 fora minimum length of 0.75 in. ( 19.1 mm) from the bitend and the pick end. respectively.
4.3.3 The face，blade，and pick end shall not sink.mushroom. chip,crack, or spall when subjected to thestriking lest specihed in para.4.4.3.
4.3.4 Handles shall not loosen or scparate from thehead, crack, or break when subjected to the lestsspecified in paras.4.4.3 and 4.4.4.
4.4 Tests
Many tests required herein are inierently hazardousand adequate safeguards for personnel and propertyshall be employed in conducting such les1s.
4.4.1General. Sample bricklayers” hammers andprospecting picks shal be tested and shall conform tothe requirements of all applicable tests specified inparas.4.4.2 through 4.4.4.Separate (new) samples shallte used for each of the lests. Failure to meet therequircments of any of the tests indicates the bricklayer’shammer or prospecting pick is not in compliance withthis Standard.
4.4.2 Hardness Determination Test. Hardnessdetermination with respect to faces. blades， and picksshall bc made on a mounted or unmounted specimenthat has been cut from the tool using the wet abrasiveor other equivalent method. Any hadness test will beacceplable that utilizes equipment and methods equiva-lent to Rockwell hardness determination as spccifiedin ASTM E 18.
4.4.3Striking and Tensile Force Test. Prior lotensile force lesting. sample tools shall be subjeciedto the following striking test. The tools shall receive20full swinging blows by a person of average build,
