4.3.2The hardness of the struck face of the chiselor set shall not exceed 45 HRC.
4.4 Tests
Many tests required herein are inherently hazardous.and adequate safeguards for personnel and propertyshall be employed in conducting such tests.
4.4.1 General. Brick chisels and brick sets shallbe capable of meeting tests specified in paras.4.4.2through 4.4.4.Separate (new) samples shall be usedfor each of these tests. Failure to meet the requirementsof any one of the tests indicates that the chisels orsets are not in compliance with this Standard.
4.4.2 Hardness Determination Test. Hardnessdeterminations with respect to cutting edges and struckfaces shall be made on a fixtured tool or on a suitablemounted or unmounted specimen that has been cutfrom the tool using the wet-abrasive or other equivalentmethod. Any hardness test that uses equipment andmethods equivalent to Rockwell hardness determinationequipment as specified in ASTM E 18 shall be ac-ceptable.
4.4.3 Impact Test for Brick Chisels. There shallbe no chipping. spalling, cracking, dulling,or turningof the cutting edge; no mushrooming or chipping ofthe head (struck face); and no bending of the tool whcntested according to the following procedure. Normaldefonnation at either end is pcrrnitted.’
The brick chisel shall be mounted vertically withthe cutting edge resting crosswise on the largest surfaceof a rectangular common brick having a minimumthickness of 2.00 in.(50.8 mm) and a width of at least3.00 in. (76.2 mm).
The brick shall rest on a solid foundation that supportsthe entire brick surface, such as a block weighing notless than I0 lb (4.5 kg).A steel weight of 5 lb(2.3kg) and having a striking face hardness of 45 HRCto 60 HRC or equivalent shall be dropped 20 timesfrom a height of 10.0 in.(254 mm) squarely onto thcchisel struck face. The diamcter of thc striking faceof the weight shall not be less than 0.375 in.
(9.53 mm)larger than the struck face of the chisel.Typically the weight is cylindrical and is droppedthrough a seamless tube slightly larger than the diameterof the weight. The test brick shall be moved after eachdrop of the weight to make a new impression.
4.4.4 Impact Test for Brick Sets. The impactlest for brick sets shall be the same as the test in para.4.4.3,except that the weight shall be dropped 10 times.
5SAFETY REQUIREMENTS AND
LIMITATIONS OF USE
ia)Brick chisels and brick sets are special-purposetools designed.manufactured, and intended only foruse in scoring and cutting brick and masonry block.(b) To avoid possible eye or other bodily injury, thcse tools shall not be used to cut metal objects orconcrete.
icJA hammer blow should always be struck squarelywith the hammer face parallel with the stnuck face ofthe brick chisel or brick sct. Glancing blows, overstrikes, and understrikes should be avoided.
(dJ No surface of the chisel or sel other than thestruck face shall be struck. The ball peen.hand drilling,or engineer’s hammer of the appropriate size shall havea striking face with a diameter approxinately 0.375in. (9.53 mm) larger than the struck face of the brickchisel or brick set.
eJBrick chisels and brick sets shall never be struckby a bricklayer’s hammer.
Brick chisels and brick sets shall not be usedfor prying or wedging.
fg)Safety goggles or equivalent eye protection con-fonming to ANSI Z87.1 shall be worn by the user andall persons in the immediate area where any brickchisels or brick sets are being used to avoid possibleeye injury from flying objects.
h) Brick chisels and brick sets shall be inspectedprior to each use, and their use discontinued at thefinst sign of bending of the chisels or sets or of chippingor cracking of the cutting edge or the stnuck face.i Except as indicated in paras.5j)and 5(k). noarea, section,or portion of the brick chisels or bricksets shall be ground. welded, treated by reheating. orotherwise altered from the original condition as fur-nished by the manufacturer.
