ASME B18.31.3:2009 pdf free download Threaded Rods (Inch Series)
1INTRODUCTION1.1 Scope
This Standard covers the complete general and dimen-sional data for inch series threaded rods recognized asAmerican National Standard. Included are diameters#4 through 4 in.UNC,UNF, 8UN,and ACME in bothright- and left-handed threads.
At this time, there are no ISO standards for inchthreaded rods.
The inclusion of dimensional data in this Standard isnot intended to imply that all of the products describedherein are stock production sizes. Consumers shouldconsult with suppliers concerning lists of stock produc-tion sizes.
1.2 Dimensions
All dimensions in this Standard are in inches, unlessotherwise specified.
1.3 Terminology
All terms used in this Standard are defined inASME B18.12.
1.4Referenced Standards

2GENERAL DATA2.1 Length
Threaded rods are commonly produced in, but notlimited to,3-ft,6-ft,10-ft, and 12-it lengths. The lengthof the threaded rod shall be measured, overall, from endto end. The length tolerance on all threaded rods in nominal lengthsof 6 ft and longer shall ebe t ro.snd±/4 in. for nominal lengths less than 6 ft. See Fig.1.
2.2 Threads
Unified threads shall conform to the requirements of
ASME B1.1. For UNC and UNF threads,Class 1A twilrbe furnished unless otherwise specified. Plated threads
shall conform to ASME B1.1,Class 3A high limit (basic)and the low limit requirement of the before-coated orplated thread class.Class 2A threads shall be used on8 UN threads and at the manufacturer’s option for otherseries, and for sizes where 1A is not applicable.
ACME threads shall meet the requirements of ASMEB1.5,Class 2G, unless otherwise specified.
2.3 Thread Acceptance Gaging
Unless otherwise specified by the purchaser, gagingfor screw thread dimensional acceptability shall be inaccordance with Gaging System 21 as specified in ASMEB1.3M.
2.4Ends
The ends shall be of sufficient workmanship to allowfor easy assembly with an appropriate mating nut.2.5 Straightness
When required, straightness limits and the inspectiontechnique to be used to evaluate straightness shall beagreed upon between the purchaser and the supplier.2.6 Materials and Mechanical Requirements
There are four primary designations for threaded rodmaterials. Other materials may be specified by thepurchaser.
2.6.1 Steel. Unless otherwise specified, Steel shalldesignate low carbon steel meeting the minimumrequirements of ASTM A 307 , Grade A.
2.6.2 A36.Materials shall meet the requirements ofASTM F1554,Grade 36.
2.6.3 B7.B7 shall designate the material andmechanical properties of ASTM A 193/A 193M,Grade B7.
2.6.4 CRES. Unless otherwise specified,CRES shalldesignate corrosion resistant steel of either 18-8 (302,303, or 304) or 316 as designated by the purchaser. Rodsdesignated as 18-8 shall meet the tensile and yieldstrength requirements of Alloy Group 1, condition cwper ASTM F 593. Rods designated as 316 shall meet thetensile and yield strength requirements of Alloy Group 2,condition cW per ASTM F 593.
2.6.5 Nonferrous Materials.Nonferrous materialsshall conform to ASTM F 468.
2.7 Finishes
The purchaser shall designate the required finish.Unless otherwise specified, plain finish steel rods shallbe coated with a light oil to protect it from corrosionduring transportation and storage.
Electroplated rods shall be finished in accordance withASTM F 1941.
CRES rods shall be cleaned and descaled in accor-dance with ASTM A 380.
