4.4 Markings
Sockets and attachments shall be marked in a plainand permanent manner with the manufacturer’s namcor with a trademark of such known character that thesource of manufacture and country of origin may bereadily determined.In addition. sockets shall be markedin a plain and permanent manner with the nominalsize of the wrench opening (distance across flats) forthe nut,bolt,or screw end.
4.5 Proof Torque
When tested as specified, sockets and extensionsshall withstand the proof torque specified in the applica-ble tables without failure or permanent deformation(set) that might affect the durability or serviccabilityof the wrenches.
4.6 Hardness
Sockets and attachments shall be hardened and shallhave a hardness value for the various sizes within therange shown in the table below except that the maximumhardncss for Type I Class 4 and 5 shall be 52 HRC.
4.7 Wrench Opening
Wrench opening tolerances shall be such as to ensureacceptance when used with gages conforming to ASMEB107.17M.
4.8 Finish
4.8.1 Surface. All external surfaces shall be freefrom pits,nodules, burrs,cracks,and other detrimcntaldefects affecting scrviceability.
4.8.2 Coatings.The coatings shall be adherent,smooth,continuous,and free from uncoated areas.Sockets and attachments shall have one of the followingcoatings.
4.8.2.1 Phosphate Coating. The coating shallconsist of a chemically produced phosphate coatingfollowed with a coating of a rust preventative.
4.8.2.2 Oxide Coating.The coating shall consistof a chemicalily produced oxide coating followed witha coating of a rust preventative.
4.9 Bolt Clearance Hole
A bolt clearance hole shall be provided in all socketsexceptType IH, universal sockets detailed in para.4.9.1.The minimum depth of the bolt clearance holeshall be 1.5 times the minimum depth of the nutopening as set forth in the respective tables for regularlength sockets and not less than 55% of the overalllength for long length and extra long length socketsas mcasured from the face of the wrench end.Thesize of the bolt clearance hole shall be in accordancewith that of the applicable size socket specified in therespective tables for cach class and style.
4.9.1 A bolt clearance hole may be provided inType 1II. Class 1 and 2, universal sockets. The diameterof the hole if provided shall be in accordance withthe applicable size socket as specified in Tables 14and 15.
4.10 Through Hole
through hole having a minimum diameter equalto50% of the square drive size or equal to the boltclearance hole diameter,whichever is smaller, shall beprovided.
4.11Internal Drive Opening
All internal drive openings shall be well defined.The openings shall conform to ASME B107.4M.
4.12 Countersink of Nut End Socket OpeningIf countersunk,the nut end socket opening shall becountersunk with an included angle of 85 deg to 155dcg and a minimum diameter equal to the across-corners dimension of the opening.
4.13 External Corners
External corners shall be broken with no sharp edges.
4.14 Type l – Socket, Single Hexagon (6-
Point) and Double Hexagon (12-Point)Sockets shall conform to Tables 1 through 7,Table9,and Table 10.
